Arsenal make opening offer for Declan Rice
It's good news and bad for Arsenal fans from David Ornstein.
The north London club have made their opening offer for England international Declan Rice — but Manchester City are exploring an approach for the West Ham United captain.

The latest on Manchester City
Why would you change a treble-winning team?
That is a question that Manchester City may well have to answer this summer, with the champions of England and Europe likely to not rest on their laurels.
- High chance Kyle Walker leaves
- Joao Cancelo also likely to depart
- Possible need for at least one new wide player
Sam Lee has the details.
Marcus Thuram: The hottest free agent this summer
Marcus Thuram, the forward who will be available on a free after not renewing his Borussia Monchengladbach deal, is unspurprisingly in demand this summer.
He stands at 6ft 3in (1.9m) with an explosive early burst of pace and exceptional dribbling ability - he got 16 goals and seven assists last season.
Thuram, the son of Lilian and brother to Khephren, is strong and adept at using his body to barrel past defenders. And if he wanted to commit to being a central striker, he’ll be hard to stop once he’s running towards goal.

Arsenal plan formal Rice offer
Arsenal have made an initial Kai Havertz move and plan to make West Ham United a formal offer for Declan Rice soon.
There has been positive dialogue around the matter and a bid is expected to be lodged in due course.
There is no desire at Arsenal to waste anybody’s time and so they plan to formalise their efforts once the situation is in good shape.
Mikel Arteta’s players return from their summer break in the first week of July, ahead of a training camp in Germany. Arsenal would like to strengthen Arteta’s squad by then, but if not then ideally they will have done so before leaving on July 16 for a tour to the US.

Man United will not make formal approach for Kane
Harry Kane's contract at Tottenham Hotspur is up next summer and the forward has been linked with a move to Manchester United, but United have decided against making a formal approach.
The 29-year-old forward was Erik ten Hag's choice to become United's new No 9 but talks will not be taken any further with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy not willing to sell to a Premier League rival.
This further blow to United's transfer plans comes after David Ornstein reported today that United had a £40million offer for Chelsea's Mason Mount rejected.
Why might Mount leave Chelsea?
This is a complicated question. Mount has been significantly underpaid for the best part of three years; he remains one of the lowest-paid members of Chelsea’s first-team squad, earning less than £100,000 per week ($124,000), on the five-year deal he signed at the beginning of the 2019-20 season.
He was a returning loanee and a recent Cobham graduate at that point. He has since played a key role in the Champions League triumph of 2021, established himself as an England regular and been voted Chelsea’s player of the year twice.
Boehly and Eghbali have been unable to tie Mount down to a new deal that better reflects his status at the club. It is also fair to say the constant turbulence this season has not helped matters as Mount weighs up his future.
Would Mount fit in at Man United?
This transfer has potential, but might not be a seamless adaptation.
The most obvious move would be for Mount to replace Christian Eriksen next to Casemiro. Mount could provide the same progressive passing, set-piece delivery and late entries into the box of Eriksen while improving United’s defensive intensity when out of possession.
There is some method in United’s pursuit of someone seven years younger than the Dane who can provide similar attacking output plus superior defensive resistance.
The question is whether being better than Eriksen or United’s other box-to-box midfielders is a good enough benchmark for what United want to achieve in future seasons.
Chelsea reject £40m offer for Mount from Man United
Chelsea have rejected a £40million offer from Manchester United for Mason Mount.
The Athletic reported in May that Mount, 24, was leaning towards a move to Old Trafford with other clubs chasing his signature aware of his preference.
The England international has a year left to run on his deal at Stamford Bridge but talks over extending his stay have so far failed to yield a positive conclusion.
How important has Johnson been this season?
Johnson’s pace and direct running were often Forest’s biggest source of attacking threat this season with 11 goal involvements (eight goals, three assists) in the Premier League. And only Morgan Gibbs-White (34) started more league game than Johnson’s 33.
He was relegated to the bench occasionally in its final weeks but has gone through a massive evolution as a player.
They are unlikely to consider selling such an important asset unless somebody comes up with a far bigger offer for the 22-year-old Wales international, as they look to build in their second season in the top flight.

Forest turn down approach for Johnson from Brentford
Nottingham Forest have knocked back an approach from Brentford for Wales international Brennan Johnson.
The London club have indicated they are willing to play a club record £30million ($38.1m) for the forward, who has evolved into a key figure under Steve Cooper, during Forest’s rise from the Championship.
We'll have some analysis coming up shortly from our Forest writer Paul Taylor on how important Johnson has been this season.
What might Havertz at Arsenal look like?
From an Arsenal perspective, it would depend on how they look to use Havertz. They took a clear path towards a general 4-3-3 shape over the past two seasons but the Germany international may not slot straight into that shape.
Although their primary 4-3-3 made Arsenal title challengers, their lack of alternatives held them back at times. Considering Havertz can fulfil multiple roles in the front line, having him as a different option to Gabriel Jesus could go some way to changing that.
Should Arsenal’s pursuit materialise, dropping the 24-year-old into a more fluid attack could also help him rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s top teenagers before signing for Chelsea.
Do Chelsea need to sell Havertz?
Our Chelsea writers Simon Johnson and Liam Twomey took a look at what we can expect from the west London club after they spent £525million last season across two windows. This is what they found:
- Chelsea's ability to recruit this summer will be dictated in large part by trimming bloated squad
- some deals may need to be completed by June 30 for FFP reasons
- Co-owners confident there will be sufficient options in market to generate the income they need
Jobe Bellingham's transfer to Sunderland comes on the same day as Jude's transfer to Real Madrid
Sunderland have completed the signing of Jobe Bellingham from Birmingham City.
The midfielder has now completed his transfer to the Championship side, labelling Sunderland as the “perfect club” to continue his football education.
The move comes on the same day as his older brother Jude’s transfer to Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund.
The 19-year-old signed a six-year deal with Madrid and Dortmund later confirmed Madrid had agreed to pay them €103million in what will be one of the highest-value transfers in the history of both clubs.
Liverpool goalkeeper joins Crewe on loan
Young Liverpool goalkeeper Harvey Davies has secured a season-long loan move to League Two outfit Crewe Alexandra.
The club's coaching staff are keen for the highly-rated 19-year-old to play regular first-team football in order to help his development.
Davies, who has been with Liverpool since the age of nine, regularly trains alongside senior keepers Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian.
The England Under-19 international has yet to make his competitive first-team debut for Liverpool but has been on the bench on 11 occasions.
His progress was rewarded with a new long-term contract last summer.

Bellingham... to Sunderland
One day, two Bellingham transfers.
After Real Madrid confirmed Jude Bellingham's arrival, Sunderland have now announced a deal for younger brother Jobe.
Jobe Bellingham moves to Wearside from Birmingham City and will finalise a move after returning from international duty with England’s Under-18s.
The Athletic had reported last month that the 17-year-old had travelled to the Stadium of Light ahead of a potential transfer.
